An Ode to Mother Earth…
Earth Day is a day of observance, a celebration of nature, a way to give back for all that she's provided us with.
We, at Originate, strongly believe in the absolute respect for our planet and all its resources that it so readily provides us with. This serves as our inspiration to design mindfully and create conscious collections that not only satisfy our creative appetite to fill your seasonless wardrobe but also keep in mind our environment, where we use natural materials and aim to reduce any wastage we can from our part.
The fashion industry, unfortunately, plays a major part in the degradation of the world's natural resources along with considerably causing pollution. However, it can and is working towards bettering itself as an industry and taking various steps in approaching production and consumption with a more contained and sustainable approach.
That is why there are certain rules and regulations conducted to keep the industry in check. Fashion sustainability rules refer to guidelines and principles that promote environmentally and socially responsible practices within the fashion industry. These rules aim to minimize the negative impacts of fashion production and consumption on the planet and people. While specific rules may vary depending on different initiatives and organizations, here are some general fashion sustainability rules:
1. Reduce, Reuse, And Recycle: Encourage the adoption of circular economy principles by reducing waste, reusing materials, and promoting recycling throughout the fashion supply chain. We salvage any wastage we can and use scraps in the form of inner facings to design pouches, masks, straps and more! Ex nostalgia pouch, masks, inner facing for tapered pants etc.
2. Use Sustainable Materials: Prioritize the use of eco-friendly and renewable materials such as organic cotton, hemp, linen, recycled polyester, and other sustainable fibers. Avoid materials derived from non-renewable resources or that cause significant environmental harm, such as fur or exotic animal skins. All Originate collections are made using natural materials and fabrics be it, Celeste with its organic soybean fabrics, Nostalgia using yarn dyed hand woven khadi cotton fabric or our recently launched Terra collection in natural colour tones all made in cotton linen fabrics - these collections and more set precedent of the natural direction we consciously aim to take.
3. Ethical Production: Ensure that the production of fashion items respects human rights, fair labor practices, and safe working conditions. Support factories and manufacturers that adhere to fair trade and ethical standards. We at Originate are proud supporters of all our staff members, especially the supremely skilled artisans who gloriously produce our garments at fair wages and in extremely safe and comfortable conditions.
4. Minimize Chemical Usage: Reduce the use of toxic chemicals, dyes, and hazardous substances in textile production and processing. Opt for low-impact dyes and safer alternatives.
5. Energy Efficiency: Promote energy-efficient practices in manufacturing processes, such as using renewable energy sources like solar energy to light up our offices and units and optimizing energy consumption throughout the supply chain and reducing any wastage of resources.
6. Water Conservation: Encourage responsible water usage in textile production, minimizing water waste and pollution. Support water-efficient techniques and technologies, such as waterless dyeing and closed-loop systems.
7. Waste Reduction: Implement strategies to minimize waste generation at all stages of production, including design, manufacturing, and packaging. Embrace upcycling, repurposing, and waste-to-resource approaches. Ex org packaging
8. Transparent Supply Chain: Promote transparency and traceability in the fashion supply chain, ensuring that brands and retailers disclose information about their suppliers, sourcing practices, and production processes.
9. Extended Product Life Cycle: Encourage the design of durable, timeless, and high-quality fashion items that can withstand multiple uses and minimize the need for frequent replacements. Ex. terra + Shiro Kuro for being seasonless
10. Education and Consumer Awareness: Raise awareness among consumers about sustainable fashion choices and their impact. Encourage responsible purchasing decisions, such as buying second-hand, renting, or supporting brands with sustainable practices, brands such as Originate.

Different organizations and certifications, such as the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) or the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), may have additional guidelines and standards specific to their initiatives. As for us, the Ecological Plant Fiber Certification (EPFC) is a testament to our sustainability credentials. The EPFC is an independent organization that reviews the manufacturing process of a fabric and has independently determined that the final product complies with all standards for quality, safety, and production. It covers material reviews, testing, and facility inspections.
Recently we celebrated Earth day, as we do every year, and premiered a seasonless and timeless collection, Terra - Nature's comfort in every thread. Our Terra collection is inspired by a warm and breezy hug lovingly gifted to us from our mother Earth that we channeled throughout the collection. This presentation is designed to feel free, feel light and to fashion natural earthy tones that serve as a reminder of all that the world has graced us with. This collection is consciously designed to stylishly stay in your wardrobe for seasons to come and sashay you effortlessly from event to event. Every single garment from Terra has an added quirky surprise, a hand embroidered dragonfly motif that represents hope, change and love - love we have for Earth and all she’s gifted us with; hope - for a better future and a hope to change human behaviour so we can all work together for a better, cleaner and happier future.
